I arrived in Astoria last night (after a thorough soaking which was my welcome to Oregon!). I met another cyclist doing a similar route to me yesterday so it was good to compare equipment and experiences.
Apparently lots of movies get made in Astoria, there seems to be quite a local industry around the fact The Goonies was filmed here. You can go and see their house from the beginning of the film (and Data's house next door), and the school from Kindergarten Cop is next door (that will be a special moment for me). In less happy news the lady in the information centre told me Chunk died from a drug overdose aged 32. One truffle shuffle too many .... (sorry!).
So I will actually be a pacific pedalist from today as I head down the coastal road. I'll keep you updated ....

Chunks dead :(
Good to hear that the ride is going well.
rip chunk. that's sad.
i just bought a bike on ebay so you can probably claim credit for inspiring me with your biking blog, especially as its a touring machine. needs a bit of work check it http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&item=200255674784 moving on from the bmx at last!
mark and i just got tickets to go and see roots manuva at shepherds bush empire in a few weeks. we're in the old people's seats though, so will have to tap our toes rather than have a proper stomp. even mark is nearly 30 now though so i think we're where we belong...
keep pedalling
Looks like a bargain! The bloke I met yesterday doing the same ride as me was doing it on an 18 speed (and amazingly had more stuff than me!).
Enjoy Roots, heard some of the new album the other day in Seattle and sounded good.
ok, I have a problem with this report of Chunk's death. Let's go over the details here.
Exhibit A:
Jeff Cohen - born June 1974. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0169480/
that would make him 34 right now. if he died at 32, that would be 2 years ago. 2 years is usually more than enough time for someone to update the imdb page with the date o' his death.
Exhibit B:
http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117992696
an Variety article about his current company dated 2 days ago. no mention of his quote coming from the grave.
Exhibit C:
http://www.cohengardnerlaw.com/about.html
his Law firm. complete with his email address.
In Summary:
Alastair, it sounds like the information lady simply lied to you. Was it on purpose? was she trying to teach you a lesson? or was she simply misinformed. I leave that to the jury to decide.
the defense rests.
Sincerely,
Greg "Fact Checkin'" Williams.
ps: ride on, man, ride on!!!
Wow that was some bad information she gave me (plus it put a bit of a downer on our conversation!). It sounded really plausible too. Free Willy was filmed round here, maybe it was the kid from that she was thinking of. Or the whale.
it could have been "Sloth" that she was thinking of. he died in 1989 of heart failure, thought to be caused by steroid use.
as for the whale... man, don't even go there. saddest story of all:
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1430748/bio
seriously, don't read that if you like the fantasy idea that Keiko is living in hollywood, shmoozing with the other stars.
so, where are you now? more updates!!! :)
Yay Chunks still alive. Excellent detective work :)
